LISBETHS!!!!!!! ^-^
While we’re here, I did go see the American Version. I’ll say this, they passed. They didn’t ruin it and I’d watch it again. I want to, and right after it watch the original Swedish version and read the book again. I want to see specifically what the difference is.
Firstly because, Lisbeth Salander is just plain awesome to me.
Secondly, because I want to study the different interpretations, styles and methods use, that is, the American vision of a Swedish story, the Swedish film-making style of the book and how that book was plotted, because the book itself I was written well. Or maybe that was the second and third books, because damn I want to piece together how exactly he wrote that plot.
They did change a few things nearer the end, but it did not take away from the original ending written in the book and swedish film. I can’t complain and it fits in a way. Also, It actually had a bit more humor, (haaaa yeah I said it, but believe it or not I think so) than the original sweddish version, which was fine. It was that trick, I believe that TV uses. You know, make a show that works on your fears, anxieties and insecurities and then break for an ad which promises you happy feelings and good times so you buy something? Yeah, that’s how I think the humor was used, so it was easier to digest for the American audience and used a pattern that they’re bombarded with (more than I am anyway. I don’t watch TV)
I think however that Rooney and Noomi play the almost the same Lisbeth with subtle differences. Perhaps Rooney was a more fragile, more sensitive Lisbeth than Noomi’s, specifically in relation to Blomkvist- also a lot of Blomkvist protecting her not the other way around as in the Swedish films. Noomi’s Salander was tougher in appearance, her fragility and sensitivity was shown in the underlying face of the show, she’s a victim. Another thing was that I don’t think Rooney’s Lisbeth showed her hacker abilites as much as Noomi’s, something I loved. We saw Rooney as very investigative, she knew how to research. Noomi did this as well, but I feel like Noomi was a programmer, a white hat Hacker, and Rooney was an undercover investigative spy type.
These are just my observations from two week old memory though, so until I sit down and go through all three versions of the story and open it up to find the precise subtle differences - I can’t give you more than that. Let’s say, I enjoyed it, they didn’t ruin it and it was even fun (haaa again, believe I said it) for those who have read and watched the Swedish version. ^-^
Enjoy. I didn’t expect to ramble this long, but thankies you ppls who read it to the end of my Lisbeth Salander Ramble. Yay for Wasp! ^-^
Edit:This discussion really does a better job at the differences between Rooney and Noomi’s Lisbeths. I’ll probably discuss this a bit later in another post (most likely) but I will say that I agree - Rooney is the American Lisbeth, she’s sexy, teenage rebellious and fragile. Noomi is Swedish, she doesn’t need the sex appeal to be badass and still be the the victim of her story. I still think and I still love Noomi Rapace’s Lisbeth Salander over Rooney Mara by MILES. So I’ll definitely be revising this post when I churn it more in my head.
